I found the SQL 2000 version incredibly helpful when I was teaching myself SQL, and keep using the 2005 version.

Other than that, it's BOL all the way.

Paul gives good talks too. If you see his name at a conference, it is worth going. Actually, if one just recorded what he said, he'd produce a much easier book to read.
