    Ok,

          My question concens the real world. I work as a mongrel (DBA /Sys Analyst/Six other jobs) in an educational hospital and I am curious out there as to whether the IS groups in other institutions are so blinded as they seem to be here? I have been around computers programming etc since the late 70's and I get discouraged (not about drinking though!) tat IS just doesn't understand.

    Please tell me I am only having a baaaad dream and that I'll wake up and find Nirvana out there (and a few more cold beers)

    Welcome to the wonderful world of mongrel-dom.  Been there, done that, burned the T-shirt!  Curiously enought, the IS group at the VA hospital where I once worked was similarly clueless.  Clueless enough that everything I did was on PC's so I could keep my distance as far away as possible which is how I got introduced to the wonders of implementing databases in Excel so I could take advanatage of its analytics for one of my self-correcting, predictive, modeling packages that I've developed a reputation for over the years.  [Which also introduced me to the wonders of epidemiology (yum!) and medical coding (not!).}  I suppose I can't blame them too much, everything they did on their system was implemented on top of Pick.

    What's really weird is that the best time I had was in that most conservative of institutions, the US Navy.  After saving them a few million in the first year on just one project they gave me free reign and anyone I wanted for my projects.  They did find it a bit strange to see my staring off into space, only making a notation maybe once or twice an hour on a legal pad, for days on end, but they did leave me alone.  Heck, I would have worked for free, well maybe, for them.

    Maybe it's something about the medical culture?  Perhaps it does strange things to the minds of IS workers there?  I don't  know.  Both environments are totally fault intolerant and coming from a mainframe background, so am I.  Weird.

    Have another brew.   Maybe things will look better afterwards.
