Good beer in unexpected places

Published Friday, July 07, 2006 4:36 PM

As part of an occasional series on odd places to get good beer, on Friday last week Red Gate sent me on a fact-finding mission to Cornwall to investigate “The Watering Hole” pub at Perranporth.

Now this pub is actually on the beach – not near it, or overlooking it, but actually on it. The clincher is that it also does some very fine real ale. As proof, here I am enjoying an excellent (second) pint of Helligan's honey beer:

Now if this doesn't seem like a particularly unusual place to get good beer, then firstly consider that it is the only pub in the whole of the UK that is on a beach. Secondly, tell me the last time you were served a bona-fide pint of real ale while sitting on a beach? Taken together, you can see why my visit was imperative.

If you've ever encountered good beer in an unexpected place then please tell me about it. It doesn't have to be anywhere outlandish – just somewhere you didn't expect it (like in a theme bar, for example, or in Italy). But it does have to be real ale. If you've heard of somewhere you feel needs to be checked out but can't get there yourself, drop me a line and I'll see what I can do ;).

'Ere, SQL Squirrel, never mind the hat, how did you get that nice Atavar. I've been twiddling knobs all around this site trying to find out how to get a decent picture to go with my posts.

I find the idea of getting a decent pint in a place other than a pub rather sacreligious. If you don't use a pub for the reason they were designed, they will become private houses or send up serving frightful microwaved food to retired bank managers. I could give you a list of some glorious pubs all over East Anglia but I run the risk of coming over all emotional. On the beach, I ask you.  Pshaw!

WB -- we decided to disable the public "upload avatar" option as we felt it could cause us administrative problems. However, if you'd like an avatar similar to SQL Squirrel's all you have to do is send it to me (editor@simple-talk.com) and I'll upload it for you immediately.

I'm all for using pubs for the reason they were designed. I hate it when a perfectly decent drinking pub gets a "makeover" with the usual Ikea-style wooden flooring, modern tables and crap food. Pubs are for beer and conversation and the odd bag of crisps. Full stop.

If you have a list of great pubs in East Anglia that sell something other than Greene King or Adnams (fine a pint as that can often be) then I'm definitely interested ;). One of my favourite pubs in the country is the Fat Cat in Norwich.

How do they keep the beer from getting skunked due to the sunlight?

It's pretty weird to see one of my haunts on a dev blog.....it makes Monday morning that little bit more bizzare.

When you're down in this neck of the woods again next you should check out the Blue Bar at Porthtowan - just down the coast from Perranporth and so right on the beach also.  Not a real ale house, but a much better gaff all round.  For a good pint in Cornwall try the Smugglers at Cubert (near Newquay) - a little thatched gem with a generally excellent selection of ales and decent nosh also.  The pub at Zelah (close by too) is very decent also.  But, for a local legend you *have* to go the Blue Anchor in Helston and sample their 'Spingo', a potent and top-notch ale brewed in the back of the pub and used to be sold only in half pints due to the kick.
