Simple Talk Newsletter
05 November 2011

As an experiment, we are publishing the newsletter in an alternative eBook format so that it can be read offline. Click on one of the links at the top of this article to download your chosen newsletter. We've kept copies of old newsletters so make sure the date is for the right newsletter!

The instructions for downloading it to your mobile device will vary according to the device. For the iPad Touch, iPhone and iPad you'll find you can use Apple's iBooks, Amazon Kindle or Stanza. For these tablets, you have different options:

  • Click on the epub (or PDF) link below from the safari browser, and it will load the book and offer to run it in iBooks, or in your preferred reader.
  •  email it as an attachment to a message  to an email account that you have on the tablet and  then select it. Once it is downloaded, you can tap it and opt to read it in iBooks.
  • Use iTunes, dock the tablet and then select the 'apps' tab for your device. Find the eBook reader that you have installed in the list  (e.g. Kindle or Stanza) and  either use the 'add' button under the file-list, or Drag 'n Drop onto the file-list.
  • Add the file to the 'Books' subdirectory of the 'Library' directory in iTunes by Drag 'n Dropping the file(s).
  • Use third-party software such as Calibre to load the newsletter onto your tablet.

The newsletter is provided in two different formats. EPUB (the most usual file format for eBooks since it will scale to the screen-size of the device) and MOBI (Kindle and one or two others).

If you have succeeded in doing it with another tablet device or phone, then please leave the instructions in a comment.

Subject: Working well so far

Message: I have viewed two issues of Simple-Talk on my Kindle, and it works well. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Subject: Nook results

Message: I love the idea of getting Simple-talk newsletter on my Nook, particularly if I can download it via the Nook itself (which I haven't tried yet). So far, PDF version looks decent but some formatting issues. EPUB version text is too small for me to read and doesn't seem to change when I tweak it on the Nook.

Subject: Successful using the Aldiko Reader in Android 2.1

Message: I downloaded the Simple-Talk ePub edition to my phone's SD card, into the "eBooks" folder where Aldiko stores ePubs.

I then opened the Aldiko app and went to its home screen and tapped the "SD Card" option. From there, I browsed to the "eBooks" folder and tapped on the Simple-Talk ePub. Aldiko gave me the option to open it directly or to import it into Aldiko's library so I wouldn't have to browse to the SD card to find it again. I tested both options, and both worked perfectly.

My phone is a Garmin-Asus A10, but this should work for any Android 2.1 and above phone, and possibly for earlier Android versions, too.

Message: Using the PDF format on an ASUS EP 121 without any problems. Some formatting issues, such as no margins, but I understand you can't spend a lot of time (re)formatting the newsletter.

Call me biased, but I am sad to see the explosion of all these toy formats for toy devices (and for locking people in of course). Seems such a waste of space and time. So I am happy to see you produce PDFs, they have "always" been good enough for me and I would never get a device that does even have a decent PDF reader.

Message: Very good initiative; while travelling to and fro work I can read the newsletter. Normally, with the online newsletter, I'm always battling between the newsletter and the work to be done behind the screen...

Subject: Cover each issue.

Message: Wonderful concept, just one suggestion, can the cover include in large print which issue is represented? I have my iPad set to see the cover artwork of my many documents, and this would make it so much easier to readily see which issue I want to reopen. I know I can just click the list view, but you know one less step.

Anyway this is great, thank you so much.

Subject: Subscribe to e-book?

Message: How can I subscribe to the Kindle version to my Kindle?

With Amazon I can have a uniqe e-mail address that delivers mail to this adress to my Kindle.

How can I do that for these newsletters?

I already have an e-mail subscription to the newsletter by ordinary e-mail... would like both without having to have a second account athe simple-talk.com

Cheers,
Joakim

Message: Joakim - just save the Kindle format documents to your PC, then connect your Kindle with the USB/Power lead. The PC "sees" the Kindle as an external drive and you just copy the files over.

Message: Big thanks to whomever thought of putting Simple Talk onto e-book. I've been converting the Simple Talk web pages to PDF to get them onto my Kindle which is OK but almost impossible to read unless you're Lilliputian.

Subject: The cover should include in large print which issue is represented

Message: Yes, I agree that the cover should include in large print which issue is represented. However, this must be entirely automated before we can contemplate this, seeing that the eBook version of the newsletter is still minority-interest. Soon maybe. I wonder if Gimp would do this for us?

Message: Just stumbled upon the page for downloading the newletter to read offline. What a great idea! The only issue I am having is related to where I work. They don't allow FTP transfers so I will have to wait until I get home. I mentor a couple of Jr. DBAs and have strongly recommended they subscribe to the newsletter but now they don't have any excuse as I will be posting these PDFs to our portal site.

Subject: Subscription? or short URL?
Posted by: jerryhung (view profile)

Message: This is a great idea, can I suggest 2 things?
I have Amazon 3G Kindle

1. Have a short(er) URL so I can go to it directly on my Kindle? like http://www.simple-talk.com/enewsletter

2. Subscription for eBook only? I'd love to subscribe to Kindle ebook directly with my xxx@free.kindle.com email

Thanks

Message: Since I found out I can download the newsletter and read it on my Kindle,I am really reading and enyoing it. It is great!
It would be even better if it would be possible to directly send the newsletter to my kindle email address as suggested by Jerry!
