Phil Factor is a legend in his own runtime. Scurrilous, absurd, confessional and scathing by turns, Confessions of an IT Manager targets the idiocy, incompetence and overreach of the IT management industry from vantage point all the way up and down the greasy pole. Phil Factor (real name witheld to protest the guilty) has over 20 years experience in the IT industry, specializing in database-intensive applications. For withering insight into the human weaknesses and farcical levels of ineptitude that bring IT projects to their knees, plus occasional escapes into burnished pastiche and cock-a-leg doggerel there is no funnier, more illuminating commentary on the IT crowd.

From IT projects that have trampled all over the guiding principles of successful development, to tips on training your manager to the required standard, each of Phil's tales is shot through with a wild seam of anarchic humour. And yet, in each case, the humor is just a sugar coating for a pill of sage advice, wrought from years of rough-and-tumble in the IT industry.

In his more reflective moments, he gives vent to his inner poet, penning romantic elegies to the SQL Server index, or quietly condemning recruitment agencies to Dante's inferno for crimes against innocent contractors. This book is an edited selection of some of Phil's finest writings for the Simple-Talk.com website, between 2006 and 2009. If you like what you read, visit the website for more.

Message: It has always been our intention just to give the book to Simple-Talk's registered subscribers as a thank-you, but the technology defeated us. Downloading the book at the moment requires you to register your name on the red-gate site, but the list is harmless. the worst that can happen is getting one or two emails to ask you if you'd like to subscribe! As an author, I'd be most chuffed if you tried out ANTS Profiler as well! (it really is a life-saver for a .NET developer)

If you really don't like to register, then Amazon will happily sell you an ebook version of the book.
